What Is the Life Span of a Car Battery?

The average car battery lasts for approximately four years of normal driving. When the battery is no longer capable of being recharged or can’t hold a proper charge, it must be replaced.

Temperature, humidity and other factors affect the lifespan of a car battery. Under ideal conditions a battery could last up to six years, but temperature extremes and frequent short trips strain the battery and shorten its life. When the vehicle is driven for short trips everyday, the battery never gets to the right working temperature and never achieves a full charge. The most effective way to extend the life of a vehicle battery is to keep it charged near 100 percent.
