A small electric stove uses 1,000 watts, and a larger heating element uses up to 3,000 watts. A stove does not use all of its maximum rated power; it only uses power as it heats up until it reaches the set temperature. An average stove top element uses 1,500 watts per hour while it heats on medium or high.
Heating water in an electric kettle requires less energy than heating it on a stove. While an electric kettle uses 2,000 watts, it is designed to heat the water faster because the heating element is in direct contact with the water.
