The number of steps per mile depends on the individual, but a typical number is between 2,000 and 2,500 steps. For a person who is five feet nine inches tall, the average number is 2,186. For a person who is five feet four inches tall, the average number is 2,357.

Stride length is usually directly proportional to height, but other factors need to be considered as well, including general level of fitness, personal preference and terrain. Climbing hills generally requires a shorter stride and more steps than walking on level ground. The mile is derived from the ancient Latin unit of measure called the “mille passuum,” meaning “a thousand paces,” where each pace was two steps.
