The finger and toe bones are called phalanges. Each finger and toe, with the exception of the thumb and great toe, has proximal, middle and distal phalanges.

In the fingers, the proximal phalanges are the ones closest to the hand. The distal phalanges are located at the fingertips. The middle phalanges are located between the proximal and distal phalanges. The thumbs do not have middle phalanges.

The toes are similar to the fingers, with proximal phalanges at the bottoms of the toes and distal phalanges at the tips of the toes. The middle phalanges are in between the two. The great toes, like the thumbs, do not have middle phalanges.
