Last Updated Apr 2, 2020 10:52:30 PM ET
Body composition is a special term used in physical fitness that measures the percentage of fat, muscle, water and bone found in the human body. Measuring body composition is a specialized way to determine one's true physical fitness.
Body composition goes beyond a number on a scale and looks inside a person to see what percentage of their body is fat, muscle, bone and water. For instance, a person weighing 150 pounds that is muscular is more ideal than a person weighing the same amount that has a high body fat percentage. Knowing one's body composition helps a person reduce their risks of certain ailments like diabetes and heart disease, as these illnesses are strongly linked to those with excessive body fat around the abdomen.
