What Are the Temperatures of the Nine Planets?
The planets in the solar system have temperatures that can often vary from a maximum to a minimum temperature, such as Mercury that has a minimum temperature of -300 degrees Fahrenheit and maximum of 870. These differences in temperatures occur because the side of Mercury that is facing the sun gets very hot since Mercury is so close to the sun, while its dark side does not experience this extreme heat.
Similarly, Mars has a high temperature of 98 degrees Fahrenheit at its equator and a low temperature of -190 degrees at its poles. The Earth’s average surface temperature is 45 degrees, while Venus has an average surface temperature of 850 degrees. Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are the inner planets.
The surface temperatures of the outer gas planets Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus tend to be very cold because they are so far away from the sun. The average temperature of Jupiter is -244 degrees, and the surface temperature of Saturn is -300 degrees. Uranus’s maximum temperature is -300 degrees, while Neptune’s average surface temperature can be as low as -370 degrees.
Although at one time the ninth planet of the solar system was Pluto, this planet was reassigned to a dwarf planet classification in 2006. However, it has a surface temperature of -390 degrees.
