There are many species of bamboo, and their scientific names include phyllostachys, bambusa, chusquea, borinda, fargesia and himalayacalmus. Other species are brachystachyum, chimonobambusa, dendrocalamus and schizostachyum.

The plant that’s called “lucky bamboo” isn’t a bamboo at all but a type of dracaena. Nandina, though it’s called heavenly bamboo, isn’t a bamboo either. It’s an evergreen shrub that belongs to the Berberidaceae family. Bamboo is a type of grass that spreads through rhizomes.
