What’s a Linear Meter?

A linear meter is the same as a standard meter and is 39.37 inches long. Linear measurements are a way to emphasize that only one dimension of an object or space is being described. One linear meter contains 100 centimeters.

By contrast, square meters, which are used for measurements of area, have a two-dimensional property. Area is found by multiplying two linear measurements together.

Cubic meters describe three-dimensional spaces and are found by multiplying three linear measurements together. It is not possible to convert square meters or cubic meters to linear meters, because these different measurement units describe different types of measurement.
