What Is the Purpose of an Evaporating Dish?

An evaporating dish is used in a laboratory to heat a substance or a solution using a Bunsen burner flame. Made from porcelain, ceramic or borosilicate glass, they are relatively flame-resistant. Those that are used for high-temperature applications are made of platinum or other refractory metals because of their lower risk of contamination and non-reactive properties.
Evaporating dishes come in varying sizes, although their capacities are usually small. They are often used in quantitative analysis. Removing a solvent from a dissolved substance using an evaporating dish releases the solvent into the air, requiring these procedures to be performed within a closed safety hood if the solvent is a substance other than water.
