What Products Are Made of Steel?
A wide number of products are made of steel, including vehicles, surgical tools, kitchen appliances and utensils, nails, screws and food cans. Many buildings are built using structural steel as well.
Steel is an alloy of carbon and iron, and it is one of the most important materials used for a range of purposes from construction to refrigerators to nails and screws. There are over 3,500 grades of steel, each varying in its physical and chemical properties. Stainless steel has sterile qualities, making it suitable for use in surgical environments, as well as in the kitchen.
Steel is durable and produced with a relatively low amount of energy. It is also recyclable, making it a sustainable product. Recycled steel is featured in domestic appliances, bicycle parts and metal food cans. While they are labeled “tin cans,” food cans often comprise a steel base with a thin tin layer.
Modern cars feature carbon steel, which is a lighter form of the metal. Vehicles have painted surfaces or chromium plating to prevent the steel from rusting.
A non-exhaustive list of steel products includes:
- Automotive – exhaust pipes, grilles and engines
- Surgical tools – forceps, scalpels and needle holders
- Household equipment – ovens, sinks and flatware
- Construction air ducts, chimney caps, roof cladding, doors and elevators
