How Are Poppy Seeds Dispersed?

Poppy seeds are dispersed from their pods by the wind. Contained in pods with openings at the top, the seeds fall out when the wind is strong enough to bend the stalk.
Seeds from a poppy plant are not carried very far away. They typically land close to the parent plant. A wide variety of plants and wildflowers spread their seeds in this manner, including columbine, evening primrose, nemophila, dianthus and lilium. Sycamore and ash seeds are housed in a wing-like casing that allows the seeds to fly away from the parent plant. Some plant seeds, such as the dandelion and willow herb, have feathery tails that allow them to fly.
