How Do Pigs Reproduce?

Pigs reproduce via sexual reproduction. Female hogs, known as gilts or sows, reach sexual maturity around five to six months of age and are receptive to pregnancy for two to three days of a 21-day cycle.

Pigs have considerable reproductive potential according to Mississippi State University. Wild pigs become sexually mature around six months of age, and they produce a litter size between three and eight piglets. Female pigs can give birth twice a year. Young female hogs go into heat when it is time for them to mate. According to Mother Earth News, in domestic mating on farms, male partners can mate with between 12 to 50 sows in stalls. The gestation period of sows is around 113 days.
