The parts of the alimentary canal listed in order are the mouth, pharynx or throat, esophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine. The alimentary canal is the digestive system and includes the parts of the body with which food comes in contact from eating to waste elimination.

Digestion starts in the mouth, where saliva begins to break down food. Food then passes through the throat into the esophagus and into the stomach, which secretes acid to aid in digestion. Food then travels through the three sections of the small intestine: the duodenum, the jejunum and the ileum. When food leaves the ileum, it goes into the large intestine, which is made up of the cecum, the colon, the rectum and the anus.
