Skin mitosis is the process by which skin cells divide, creating new skin cells for wound repair and skin renewal. Unlike in other types of cells, mitosis occurs constantly in healthy skin cells, according to NCBI.
Mitosis is a type of cellular division in which one cell, called the parent, divides into two identical daughter cells, reports Dawn Tamarkin, Ph.D., of Springfield Technical Community College. In the case of skin cells, it takes place in the basal layer of the epidermis. As old skin cells die and fall off, cells that are newly formed through mitosis replace them. If skin is damaged, as in the case of a cut or scrape, mitosis increases in the wound area in order to quickly close the wound to prevent infection.
