How Do You Measure Leg Length?

The length of a leg can be measured using radiography or by using a tape measure to determine the length between two predetermined points while the person is standing. The measurement method is chosen depending on the degree of accuracy needed.

The length between the anterior iliac spine and the medial malleolus can be determined using a tape measure. Imaging techniques include radiography and computed tomography scans. With radiography, the entire lower extremity of a standing subject is exposed to radiation. Imaging techniques have a higher degree of accuracy than the tape measure and must be performed by a specialist. Measuring leg length can reveal length discrepancies between the two lower limbs.
