The famous German physicist Albert Einstein had only one sister and no brothers. Albert was born on March 14, 1879, in Ulm, Württemberg, Germany. His younger sister, Maja, was born two years later in 1881 in Munich.
Albert and Maja were the offspring of Hermann and Pauline Einstein, a middle-class Jewish couple. The two Einstein children spent most of their young life in Germany. Their father co-owned a business that made electrical equipment, and their mother stayed at home to take care of the house and family. Maja and Albert both received extensive educations, and Maja went on to earn a doctorate in Romance literature from the University of Bern.
