How Many Bones Are in the Human Hand?

The human hand consists of 27 bones. There are eight carpal bones, and 14 are bones of the fingers, which are called proximal, intermediate and distal bones. Five metacarpal bones connect the fingers to the wrist and make up the palm of the hand.

Each finger contains three bones, except for the thumb, which contains two bones. Human hands and feet are remarkably similar, with the feet containing 26 bones arranged in a manner similar to hand bones. As with fingers, the toes each have three bones, with the exception of the big toe, which has two bones. The soles of the feet contain five bones called metatarsals that are arranged in a similar fashion as metacarpals.
