What Is a Malay Mancatcher?

The Malay mancatcher is a type of trap used in “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell. This trap, constructed by a hunter named Sanger Rainsford, consists of a weighted log attached to a trigger.

In this story, Rainsford and his friend Whitney head to Rio de Janeiro to hunt jaguars. Once there, they come across General Zaroff, who is also a big game hunter. After refusing to join in Zaroff’s hunt, Rainsford becomes the hunted. During the chase, Rainsford creates the Malay mancatcher, which ultimately injures Zaroff’s shoulder, making him return home for the night. The mancatcher consists of two trees, one of which is dead while the other is living and contains a trigger that makes the dead tree fall and hit the general.
