Duracell AA alkaline batteries have an expected shelf life of seven years if they are not in use. Research has shown that Duracell AA batteries can power a device for approximately 100 hours when they are in normal use in items such as flashlights and small toys.

Lithium batteries have a longer shelf life than alkaline batteries. Rechargeable batteries are also available. With normal recharging, they can last up to 10 years under normal use. Rechargeable batteries are recommended for devices that are used on a consistent basis, such as game controllers. Duracell makes the claim that “no alkaline battery lasts longer.” Studies from science projects to Consumer Reports testing seem to confirm this claim.
