A linear yard is the straight-line distance of a yard in the United States customary system of measurement. The measurement of a linear yard is 3 feet or 36 inches.
A linear yard can be used to measure the distance from one point to another in which only one dimension is considered in the calculation, such as length. This is different from a square yard, which uses the two dimensions length and width to determine area. Furthermore, these two units of measure differ from the cubic yard, in which the dimensions length, width and height or depth are used to determine volume.
