The largest animal in the rainforest is the African forest elephant. This forest dwelling elephant weighs approximately 2, 000 pounds and is found in the Congo Basin.
African forest elephants are herbivores with straight downward tusks and narrow, long mandibles. They commonly feed on bark and leaves, but the main part of their diet is fruit. Due to the extreme demand for ivory and the resultant poaching, the population of African forest elephants reached a critical level in the 1990s. Over the years, their numbers have fallen from around 700,000 to under 100,000, with half the population that remains found in Gabon.
