A graduated cylinder is one instrument used to measure volume. Graduated cylinders are available in several sizes. The user reads the volume from the bottom of the meniscus, the curve at the surface of the liquid.
A second volume-measuring device used in the laboratory is the pipette. The calibration of bulb pipettes allows the delivery a single volume each time. They are accurate to four significant figures. Users are able to vary the volume they measure using a graduated pipette, but these devices traditionally only offer accuracy to three significant figures. Piston air-driven micropipettes deliver volumes as small as one microliter and allow the user to repeat the measurement with the push of a button.
