What Is the Function of the Scapula?

The function of the scapula is to provide movement and stabilization of the arm at the shoulder by attaching it to the trunk of the body, known as the thorax. The scapula is a flat bone that is shaped somewhat like a triangle. The scapula, along with the clavicle and humerus, make up the shoulder.

The scapula lies over the second to seventh ribs and is tilted at a 30-degree angle. It is surrounded by 17 muscles that help to provide movement and control to the area. Ligaments attach the top of the scapula to the clavicle while the outer side is attached to the humerus bone by a socket. The humerus and scapula form a ball and socket joint, which is one of the body’s most flexible joints.
