What Is the Function of a Ring Stand?
Ring stands are tools used during chemical reactions in laboratories to hold and support hardware. A ring stand consists of a vertical metal rod attached to a heat-resistant base.
The hardware that is attached to ring stands includes versatile clamps, three-prong clamps and rings. Glassware, including beakers, flasks and test tubes, is held in place by the hardware. Chemical reactions occur within the glassware. Ring stands are convenient and safe because they prevent the scientist from having to hold glassware. For chemical reactions that require heat, a Bunsen burner is placed on the base of the ring stand. The hardware slides up and down the ring stand so the glassware is held at exactly the desired distance from the flame.
