According to Eden, the first recorded tsunami occurred off the coast of Syria over 4,000 years ago. The Storegga Slides is a famous event that occurred in the prehistoric era that may have been caused by a tsunami.
In 1883, the island volcano of Krakatoa erupted and caused tsunamis that spread as far as the English Channel. It caused so much devastation that one Indonesian area never recovered. It is now known as the Ujung Kulon Nature Reserve. A tsunami tends to hit the coasts of Australia every two years, while Japan expects a tsunami every six to seven years.
