An example of interspecific competition in a deciduous forest is the competition for resources between squirrels and chipmunks. These animals compete with one another for food and other resources. Interspecific competition is competition that occurs between two different species.
Interspecific competition is not as strong as intraspecific competition, which occurs within species. While the squirrel and the chipmunk compete for food, they both have to compete with many more animals in their own species for resources such as nesting sites or mates. Both have specific habitats and both mate with their own species. For each type of competition, it is stronger when there are more organisms present or at higher population densities.
