What Is the Erlenmeyer Flask Used For?

An Erlenmeyer flask is used for the storing and mixing of chemicals in a laboratory setting. It is one of the most common flasks used within laboratories.

The Erlenmeyer flask was created by Emil Erlenmeyer in the 1860s to help scientists have a better way of mixing, pouring and storing chemicals. The flask has a flat bottom that makes it easy to place on a table or a flat surface. It will not spill as easily as flasks that do not have a flat bottom, and it must be placed in a storage rack. The flat bottom is much wider than the top and it is where the majority of chemicals will be stored.

The flask has a tapered look to it with its size decreasing closer to the neck where liquids and other chemicals can be poured into it. The bottom storage part of the flask is a triangular shape and the mouth wide so that it is easy to pour chemicals in and out of the container. The top of the flask is open, but can easily be closed up with a stopper to help scientists store liquids. These flasks are often made out of glass materials that are not reactive to chemicals.
