In mathematical terms, the distance between two points is simply called distance. More specifically, the length of a line that connects the points measured at each point is the definition of a distance between two points.
In physics, the term distance refers to how far a something travels, whereas displacement measures how far something is from a point. In other words, a person who takes a meandering path but returns to the starting point has traveled a measurable distance, but the displacement is zero. Distance is a scalar quantity in physics, which means it carries only a numerical value. Displacement is a vector quantity. In addition to the scalar component, it also includes a direction.
