What Is the Difference Between Faradic and Galvanic Current?

A faradic current is an alternating, asymmetric current that stimulates muscles throughout its nerve, according to the University of Buffalo. A galvanic current is a term mostly used in medicine meaning a direct current of steady flow.

According to CACI International, faradic currents have a higher intensity than microcurrent stimulation, which makes them suited for firming and toning body muscles. The current is delivered through electrically conductive pads that are positioned over specific muscle groups. The current is a low-frequency alternating milli-amperage current delivered in a series of short pulses a few milliseconds in length. As the current passes through the conductive pads, it stimulates the motor points of the muscle triggering a visible muscle contraction.

According to Beyond Esthetics, galvanic currents are used primarily for galvanic facials. A galvanic facial uses mild electric currents that consist of positive and negative ions to refresh, stimulate and rejuvenate the skin. It uses a process by the scientific name of iontophoresis to transport electrically charged particles (ions) into the skin through gels that are positively or negatively charged. The charged ingredients are carried into the deeper layers of the skin and concentrated there. The outcome of a galvanic facial is skin that is thicker, healthier and more beautiful.
