Reversed polarity occurs when the positive and negative wires are connected the wrong way at an electrical outlet. Normally, the positive wire is connected to the positive terminal and the negative wire to the negative terminal in an electrical outlet.
However, due to color-coding issues, sometimes the positive (or “hot”) wire is connected to the negative terminal and the negative wire is connected to the positive terminal. This reversed polarity can cause severe problems; electrical shock and damage to electrical appliances are possible when using outlets with reversed polarity. In most cases, the appliances work normally, but the instability of the circuit can pose a danger and should be corrected as quickly as possible by an electrician.
