Metric tons of crude oil can be converted to barrels by multiplying total tonnage by 7.33. The conversion rate for crude oil is an approximation because it is based on the worldwide average gravity of crude oil. Refined oil products have a variety of conversion factors due to density variations.
Liquid petroleum gas converts at a rate of 11.6 barrels per metric ton, the highest ratio of all the refined oil products. Conversely, residual fuel oil converts at the lowest rate of refined oil products, at 6.7 barrels per metric ton. The fuels gasoline, kerosene and diesel can be converted to barrels by multiplying tons by 8.5, 7.8 and 7.5, respectively.
