Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is made up of a combination of propane, butane, and trace amounts of other chemicals, including pentane. Butane comprises slightly less than 70 percent of the gas. Propane comprises nearly 29 percent of the gas, leaving just over 1 percent for the trace components.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas occurs naturally in crude oil, but it can also be created as a by-product of petroleum refining. It is commonly used as a transportation fuel, cooking fuel or for heating homes and other structures.
While Liquefied Petroleum Gas is non-toxic, it is, like many petroleum products, highly flammable.
Although it is primarily used as a gas, it is typically stored and transported in its liquid form.
