Burgundy, a deep reddish brown color named for Burgundy wine, is a mix of red, brown and a little bit of blue. The purple undertone of burgundy is created by the interaction between the red and the blue. Mixing any primary color with its complementary color creates brown.
Burgundy can be made with a variety of different proportions of red, brown and blue. A brighter burgundy can be mixed by adding more red, or a deeper tone can be achieved by mixing in more blue. Mixes of red and green or blue and orange create a better brown base for burgundy than mixes of yellow and purple.
