What Is Chicken Kow?
Chicken kow is a type of Chinese chicken stir-fry dish that consists of chicken stir-fried with vegetables such as red peppers, onions, mushrooms and bamboo shoots. It’s typically served over rice and takes about 20 minutes in total to cook.
Chicken kow is a versatile dish and can be made to cater to the tastes of the person eating it. Typical vegetables that appear in the dish are carrots, water chestnuts, onions, green and red peppers, mushrooms and bamboo shoots. Chicken kow can also be made with various meats, such as beef, shrimp or tofu. The “kow” sauce is made of sherry, soy sauce, sugar, salt, pepper and sesame oil. The sauce is mixed separately and added to the chicken and vegetable mixture after it has been stir-fried.
To make chicken kow:
- Cut the chicken into bite sized pieces.
- Choose the desired vegetables, and cut these into bite-sized pieces.
- Heat a stir-fry pan over medium high heat.
- Put a tablespoon of sesame oil in the pan, and heat it for about 1 minute.
- Add the chicken and vegetables to the pan, and saute them for about 7 minutes.
- Meanwhile, combine all of the other ingredients in a separate bowl to make the sauce.
- When the chicken is cooked and the vegetables are tender, add the sauce to the pan.
- Cook until everything is heated through.
- Serve in a bowl over rice with chopsticks.
