Can Adrenaline Be Made Artificially?
Adrenaline is commercially synthesized and sold as epinephrine. It is used as an intervention for acute allergic reactions that have become life-threatening. Epinephrine and norepinephrine are two hormones secreted by the adrenal glands and obtained from animal sources as well artificial synthesis.
Epinephrine is naturally secreted by the adrenal glands and the sympathetic nerve fibers. The hormone can be obtained via extraction from the adrenal glands of cattle and sheep, or it can be made in a laboratory. Synthetic production of epinephrine entails the reaction of catechol and chloroacetyl chloride. The product of this reaction is then combined with methylamine. The resulting compound, called ketone, can then be reduced to yield commercially viable quantities of epinephrine.
