According to Good Housekeeping in 2010, the average neck circumference for women is 13.5 inches. The circumference of the neck can be measured by firmly pulling a tap measure around the neck, just below the Adam’s apple.

Many studies of heart disease have focused on waist size. However, there is some evidence that the neck circumference is also an indication of heart disease risk. A 2009 study of 3,320 participants by the Framingham Heart Study researchers showed that neck fat may be associated with high cholesterol and diabetes. These can lead to heart disease. According to the researchers, the risk of heart disease increases if a man’s neck circumference is greater than 16 inches and a women’s neck circumference is greater than 13 inches.
