One of the many interesting facts about the 1920s is that they were known as “The Roaring ’20s” or “The Jazz Age” in the United States. It was a time of rapid cultural and social change. The passage of the 18th Amendment in 1920 started Prohibition, and the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote. People were moving into the cities and the number of foreign immigrants increased.
Six interesting facts about the 1920s are:
- Music: President Warren Harding installs a radio in the White House in 1922. The invention of the radio helped spread jazz music throughout the country. Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Cole Porter become household names.
- Dance: As the jazz music gains popularity, the Charleston and Lindy Hop become popular dances. The Lindy Hop is said to have been named after Charles Lindbergh, while the Charleston was named for Charleston, South Carolina.
- Medicine: Alexander Fleming discovers penicillin by accident, ushering in an age of antibiotic use.
- Cartoon: Walt Disney envisions a mouse in red pants during a cross-country train ride. Mickey Mouse would appear in Steamboat Willie, the first cartoon with synchronized sound.
- Business: On October 28, 1929 the United States Stock Market crashed. The date is known as Black Tuesday and marks the start of the Great Depression.
The start of the Great Depression at the turn of the decade ends the “Roaring ’20s”. Prohibition would be repealed in the 1930s, and by the end of this decade the world would be entering World War II.
