John F. Kennedy’s hobbies and interests as a boy included swimming, football, tennis and boating, and he enjoyed English and history, although he had poor grades and disliked all other school subjects. Kennedy was the 35th President of the United States.
President Kennedy was born on May 29, 1917, in Massachusetts to a wealthy Irish Catholic family from Boston. He was nicknamed “Jack” by his family and was the second-oldest child in the family. He had eight brothers and sisters, many of whom found their own acclaim, such as his sister Eunice, who founded the Special Olympics, and his brother Robert, who became the U.S. Attorney General. The siblings were all very supportive of one another and stayed close throughout their lives.
Kennedy defeated Richard Nixon by a small margin on November 8, 1960, and became president. At 43 years old, he was the youngest American president in history at the time and was also the first Catholic president. Although his presidency was cut short due to his assassination in November of 1963, he was able to make accomplishments in foreign affairs, such as creating the Peace Corps, encouraging space exploration and creating the Alliance for Progress.
