What Were Some Inventions of the Late 1800s?
There were many great new inventions in the late 1800s, including the telephone, the escalator, the motion picture, the typewriter and certain vaccines. There were so many new technologies invented that U.S. patents increased from 30,000 to 640,167 by the 1900s.
The inventions and technologies made during this time period improved people’s lives and changed the way they spent their time. The first telephone in 1876 was called an electric speech machine and was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. The first phone exchange was set up by Mr. Bell in New Haven, Conn., in 1878 as a way for people to communicate with friends and family at home and at work.
The first escalator was invented by Jesse Reno and was actually an entertainment ride at Coney Island, N.Y., in 1891. This entertainment version created by Mr. Reno was an inclined stairwell that moved at a speed of 75 feet per minute. However, later on in 1899, Reno did partner with the Otis Elevator Company to make the first commercial escalator.
In 1888, Thomas Edison sent his patent for an object that would record and produce objects in motion; the motion picture. His invention was called the Kinetoscope.
The typewriter was invented by Christopher L. Shole in 1873. However, his typewriter only used capital letters. By the late 19th century, the typewriters started typing with both lower case and capitals.
Louis Pasteur was the creator of the first vaccines, which were created to treat rabies and anthrax. These vaccines were used to help both animals and humans beat these diseases.
