Which U.S. State Has the Most Lighthouses?

With more than 120 lighthouses, Michigan has more of them than any of the other 37 states that have lighthouses. While only two dozen or so of these lighthouses are open for visits, there are many more still in service, providing warnings for the more than 10,000 miles of coastline.

The more than 120 lighthouses no longer feature lighthouse keepers. Those still in use are automated and continue to help boaters navigate the murky waters on the Great Lakes. The oldest and most active of all the lighthouses on Lake Superior in Michigan is Whitefish Point Lighthouse. Visitors to Michigan can spend the night in one of the lighthouses, the Sand Hills Lighthouse Inn.
