What Type of Clothing Did Ancient Babylonians Wear?
Based on the scarce evidence that exist pertaining to ancient Babylonian culture, men and women wore skirts and shawls that resembled the style of ancient Sumerians. These trends continued after the the Babylonian empire fell and the Assyrian civilization developed, carrying over the shawls and fringed skirts.
There isn’t much evidence to show what ancient Babylonians wore, but considering they originated from Mesopotamia, much of their fashion is inferred from the historical facts surrounding the Mesopotamian civilizations that existed from 3000 B.C. to 300 B.C. The Babylonian men are described to have worn fringed skirts that were decorated with pieces of fabric cut into petal shapes. Unfortunately, there is little information written on Babylonian women’s wear. Based on the depictions of some of the Babylonian goddesses, it is inferred they also wore sleeve dresses, V-necks and straight skirts.
