What State Is About 60 Miles Northeast of Vicksburg?
The capitol city of Jackson, Miss., lies 60 miles northeast of Vicksburg, although it is not in a different state. Other states that border Mississippi include Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana, and Tennesse.
During the Civil War, General Grant marched his men from Vicksburg to Jackson to attack the Confederate forces, according to the Civil War Trust. Grant’s march to Jackson was to cut off the Confederate troops that would support Pemberton and his men in Vicksburg. Grant also wanted to cut off the rail connection from the east. Grant and his men captured Jackson on May 14, 1863, and then made their way back toward Vicksburg. By 1864, Grant had established himself as the North’s best general, and he was given command over the entire Union forces.
