Scotland’s national animal is the unicorn. The unicorn first appeared as a symbol for Scotland in the 12th century. It was seen in Celtic mythology as a symbol for life, joy, healing, masculinity and purity, among many other traits.
The unicorn has made appearances in history dating all the way back to Babylon. There are also records and descriptions of the animal in the records of the Greeks and Romans. While the animal is mythological, the ideals it represents are what make it the national animal for Scotland. It is has been included on coins during the reign of King James III and on the country’s royal arms, which were later combined with England’s to show a lion and a unicorn.
