London is located in southeastern England. It lies astride the River Thames. The city of London is the capital of the United Kingdom, and it is Britain’s largest metropolis. It is the country’s economic, transportation and cultural center, according to Encyclopedia Britannica.

The majority of Greater London south of the River Thames belongs to the county of Surrey. The majority of Greater London north of the River Thames belongs to the county of Middlesex. London grew from three different centers, which include the walled settlement founded by the Romans on the banks of the Thames in the first century C.E., which is known as the City of London, the suburb of Southwark and the City of Westminster.
