What Is a Political Feature on a Map?
Political features on maps include boundaries for countries and states, locations of cities and other markings that help the viewer understand the expanse of different political entities. Features, such as bodies of water and mountain ranges, appear for a frame of reference as well.
The focus of a political map is to show the outlines of different political entities, and depending on the scale and purpose of the map, those entities include cities, counties, provinces and countries. It is common for mapmakers to give different entities their own colors to make differentiating among them easier for the viewer. Many political maps also use different fonts to distinguish amongst different levels of political entities, meaning that names of continents do not have the same lettering as names of countries, for example.
