What Do People in Venezuela Wear?
Most people in Venezuela wear casual clothing appropriate for the tropical climate in which they live. Traditional clothing for women includes a long skirt and blouse that exposes one shoulder. When appropriate, Venezuelans wear formal clothing to work.
The clothing selected by Venezuelans reflects the Spanish and Caribbean influences in their culture. Women’s dresses and skirts often feature floral prints. It is also common for women to wear a flower in their hair and for clothing to have ornamental ruffles.
The indigenous people of Venezuela wear a different type of dress. Women often wear shorter skirts and lower cut tops. Men in these groups usually choose “campesino” or peasant attire. Even in these groups, formal times call for formal western attire.
Venezuelan tourists should select simple clothing that does not draw attention to them and should limit the jewelry they wear. The temperatures remain constant most of the year and are primarily dependant on altitude, with coastal areas and other lowlands being hot all year long. Caracas, at an altitude of 3,280 feet above sea level has an average temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit, but on clear, sunny days, temperatures reach about 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Venezuela has a dry season and a rainy season, and visitors should pack according to the season in which they are planning their visit. At night, temperatures drop, sometimes making a light jacket necessary.
