Mexico has several national animals. The golden eagle is the national bird, the jaguar is the national mammal, the xoloitzcuintli is the national dog and the green turtle is the national reptile.

Besides these, Mexico also has the vaquita as a national marine mammal and the grasshopper as a national arthropod. The vaquita is a very rare species of porpoise and its name is Spanish for ‘little cow’. The grasshopper is not only a national animal, but is also a Mexican delicacy, popular in areas such as Mexico City and Oaxaca. Grasshoppers are a popular snack at local markets and soccer games.
