What Are the Names of the United States Presidents in Chronological Order?

In chronological order, the U.S. Presidents start with George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe. The list continues with Presidents John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, Martin van Buren, William Henry Harrison and John Tyler.

The United States has had 44 presidents, as of 2015. After John Tyler, the next five presidents in chronological order are James K. Polk, Zachary Taylor, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan. The first fifteen pre-Civil War presidents belonged to the Federalist Party, Democratic-Republican Party, Whig Party or Democratic Party. The 16th President, Abraham Lincoln, ran as a Republican candidate. It was during his administration that the Civil War took place.

After Lincoln, presidents were all either Democratic or Republican. Presidents Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant made up the Reconstruction Era. Presidents James A. Garfield, Chester A. Arthur, Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison and Grover Cleveland again followed with the Gilded Age. The 25th president, William McKinley, ended the Gilded Age with his assassination.

President Theodore Roosevelt ushered in the Progressive era. He was followed by William Howard Taft and Woodrow Wilson. The Roaring Twenties was administrated under Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover. President Franklin D. Roosevelt took over administration in time for World War II; the war ended with Harry S. Truman.

The Cold War presidents follow with Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon and Gerald Ford, along with Jimmy Carter. 40th President Ronald Reagan helped end the Cold War. The presidential line continues with George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and the 44th president, Barack Obama.
