How Many States Are in Australia?

Australia has six states. They are New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia. Each state is governed by its own constitution.

In addition to the six states, Australia has ten territories, and most of them are off the coastline. Three of the territories have been given the right to self-govern. However, some matters still require Australian government approval and involvement. The other seven territories are islands, and they are governed by an ambassador appointed by the mainland government.

Australia is the sixth largest country in the world when measured by area. It is approximately 25 percent smaller than the United States.
