20,876 Allied soldiers were killed during the Battle of the Bulge, with 42,893 wounded and 23,554 reported captured or missing. German losses totaled 15,652 killed, 41,600 wounded, and 27,582 reported captured or missing.

With the Western Front rapidly deteriorating, Hitler decided his only hope to salvage the war was to force Allied commanders into signing a peace agreement so he could focus attention on the Russian front. He planned to split the Allied forces in two by using a style of attack known as blitzkrieg through the thinly defended Ardennes mountain range. While the attack saw early success, Allied forces were eventually able to push the front back across the mountains and destroy Germany’s offensive capabilities in the region.
